Dual Enrollment provides students the opportunity to take college courses at local colleges to earn both high school and college credit. Benefits of Dual Enrollment
1. Provides an introduction to college-level work and expectations
2. Credit accepted by most colleges and universities (all public colleges and universities in Tennessee, including UT, and many out-of-state colleges) for general education classes, such as English, Biology, Psychology, and Mathematics courses. (For the dual courses taught through the Vocational/Technical Department, credit may not be transferrable. Credit often leads to certification. The student will need to check with his/her high school instructor to determine the type of credit earned for vocational/technical dual courses.)
4. Exceptionally low cost. Students can receive (5) ~$500.00 Dual Enrollment Lottery Scholarships through the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation's Dual Enrollment Grant during their junior and senior years of high school to be used for tuition. (Students must maintain a 2.00 G.P.A. in their college courses to be eligible for the Dual Enrollment Lottery Scholarships each term.) See details here.
5. Experiencing college without the stress of a full load of classes but with the assistance and support from Maryville Virtual School
6. Earn up to 20 hours of college credit while still in high school.
7. Dual enrollment courses are Group 2 courses which earn a .75 bonus to a passing grade.
8. Any 3 dual enrollment courses can be counted as the elective focus requirement.
Possible Costs
Dual Enrollment courses are relatively inexpensive when compared to normal college credit hours, there are some expenses involved. Through the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation's Dual Enrollment Grant, qualifying students are eligible to receive up to five grants (up to $538.65 per course). Almost all courses will require the purchase or rental of a textbook; this textbook fee is not covered by the grant, so students are responsible to cover this cost. Textbooks can usually be purchased through the college's bookstore, from Amazon.com, or from a previous student in the class. Because finances are a private matter, Maryville Virtual School is unable to assist with costs and payments. It is the responsibility of the student and parents to work with the colleges concerning all payments and costs.

Students enrolled in college courses which are not on the M.V.S. campus will follow the college's rules and schedules.
